1901/1906 – The Early Railway Stamp Catalogues In 1901 that Herbert L'Estrange Ewen published his 448 page History Railway Letter Stamps, followed in 1906 by his Priced Catalogue of the Newspaper and Parcel Stamps Issued by the Railway Companies of the United Kingdom (1855-1906). These two publications changed railway stamp collecting from being a casual pastime to become a detailed study. Ewen's Newspaper & Parcel Stamp catalogue is fully illustrated and, for its time, the quality of illustrations in the catalogue is remarkable. This catalogue is considered even today to be the 'father' of all railway parcel stamp catalogues. http://railwayphilatelicgroup.co.uk...rcel-stamps/ |

Railway letter stamps were also used by the railway companies in Ireland. The Hibernian Handbook and Catalogue of the Postage Stamps of Ireland has a full section dedicated to the Irish railway letter stamps; i.e., also before the 1922 Irish Free State. Irish railway letter stamps on Roy Hamilton-Bowen's website: http://hibernian-news.eu/index.php?cPath=1_16Roy is the editor and publisher of the handbook. He is located in Rodgau, Germany. He is a expertiser of Irish stamps with the BDPh (Bund Deutscher Philatelisten e.V.). https://www.bpp.de/briefmarkenpruef...ilton-bowen/ |

Nice, I wonder whether Stanley Gibbons' printer did not have the 3/4 and used 1/2 d instead of 3/4 d in the listing. My 2001 edition lists them, but no three farthings. |

Hi Rod, Very nice to see your Circular Delivery stamps! Until recently my only reference was the old listing in Robson Lowe's Encyclopedia (which has lots of interesting things like this). Earlier this year I got the latest Stoneham catalogue which is very nicely produced and and this has a good listing of these with colour pictures. I understand this catalogue is going to go online and will not longer be printed given its increasing size. The final copies were being sold for a nominal price. It's sad to see it go in hard copy form as it's a very fine catalogue with excellent colour illustrations throughout. I also still use a 1977 edition of the SG QV Specialised catalogue but this doesn't list them. |

@nigelc,
Stoneham, already, is online. I just cannot add a link to it. But if you google it, you will find it. It is much better than the SG Concise with great colour illustrations. The pages posted include the telegraphs, postal fiscals, college, and circular delivery company stamps.
The 2001 12th. edition SG Specialised Vol. I (QV) does list them. |

When I tried to post this link in Nora's thread, I received a threat of being expelled from this site. |

Wow! what a Joy to search through Stoneham ! The Brits irritate me, as they don't put year dates on their stamps, at least that I can see, and it's tiresome thumbing pages. Not any more ! Found this one in a trice. Remains unidentified, must be after 2016 So I'll search that other link. |
