What Is The Skull Overprint On Hitler Stamps?

I don't mean the American propaganda stamps showing Hitler as a skull, but the normal early 1940s stamps of Hitler's profile with an overprint of a skull. The only thing I could find on a Web search is a vague assertion that they are an attempt from the 90s to make an otherwise monetarily worthless stamp valuable. This is possible, but I thought I'd check with you guys as it only came from one source with no reason given for the assertion.
No, I haven't bought one, I have been given one and I was curious. I like to know the history of my stamps, that's what fascinates me.

The vast majority of the Hitler overprints are post-war creations to defraud collectors.

Postmaster - that's fascinating. A testament to greed and gullibility, really. It still adds to the history of the stamp, I'm glad I know. I'll add a note explaining in the album

These are overprinted every year for the past 40 years ,something new listed mostly from Eastern Europe on ebay.

Seen a nice Hitler overprinted lot at Regency Stamp Auction at the Milwaukee Stamp Show around 2010 for $1,000 ,it even came with a note from the bike rider who went to each village to get the 20 different sets from the post offices . Problem was nobody ever seen this overprint in 50 years ......got no bidders .

Hi there. I know this is an old thread but, I bought a set of the Hitler head stamps on ebay that has a skull only printed on the portrait. The seller claims that they were overprinted in Russia. The set was only $9 so I went for it. It is a very nice overprint. It would have taken some work to create it I was thinking. I will post am image if you are still interested.

His claim that they were overprinted in Russia ---could be correct , -----overprinted last week ---That stamp above was never issued in Russia ,it would need a different overprint for occupation .It would need stamps with a small overprint of OSTLAND .Soviet's would never use that stamp for a overprint also .
