Hi Rod,

Your barred 66 is from Berwick in Northumberland, i.e. Berwick-upon-Tweed.

I lived not far away in Scotland and for us there was just Berwick (this one) and North Berwick in East Lothian.

I was brought up in the county of Roxburghshire close to its boundary with the county of Berwickshire.

Berwickshire lost its county town to Northumberland the last time the town changed hands between Scotland and England back in 1482.

aha!
Thanks Nigel

So ....Berwick on Tweed, that town that has no allegiance to either Scotland or England.

They are Berwickers !

Being the town is just 4 miles, south of the Scot border.
When in England they claim to be Scot, and in Scotland, claim to be Brit.
Nice to have that solved.

Nigel, any idea what the term "BYE POST" AND "BYE LETTERS" ARE ?

I am referringt to a letter by Rowland Hill in 1849 (T.P.O Wilson Page 6)
regarding having RPO's on all main roads
"to save bye bags and riding work"

I am presuming mail bags from receiving houses, given to the
lads riding mounted with posthorn?
Not come across that term in 25 years.

Google was not my friend.

Hi everyone,

Here is a reference to this receiving house in the Post-Office Edinburgh and Leith Directory 1856-57:

I guess Antigua Street is out of order alphabetically as some names have changed from previous editions and the editor or typesetter hasn't bothered to reset the full list.

In the 1852-53 edition 1 Elm Row had the place taken here by 1 Antigua Street and the entry before it had also changed (from 27 Earl Grey Street).
