There are some very rare items in that exhibit, items like 99.5 or 98 are almost certainly unique.

Good timing on this discussion. I just imaged some more stamps from that wine stamp hoard I purchased back at Christmas, and included are some mint examples of these varieties. Sadly, not the big-dollar RE196c, but examples of RE196, R198, and R198b.

First, RE196, with the small letters spelling out the denomination. We know this for certain because this is the misspelled "DOLLLAR" variety, which only exists with small letters. It is Type I (oval loop in 5).




Next is RE198, from a vertical strip of 3. Larger letters spelling out the denomination compared to above, and Type II (round loop in 5).




Lastly, RE198b, which has the larger letters of the above stamp, but is Type I (oval loop in 5) like the top stamp.
