We all know that value is established by what someone is willing to pay for an item.

I am curious. I do not collect USA and live in the UK where we do not have the same sort of grading service. I would like to know how different a stamp grading at 95% would be from one at 100%. Would the "normal" collector be able to be able to tell the two apart out of the packaging ??

From what I have read I hope this system does not spread to the UK

Fortunately, this doesn't seem to have spread to Europe - we just have to keep saying "no".

I have seen relatively common cigarette cards graded (not usually very accurately) and slabbed and offered by UK dealers on ebay at silly prices, but I think the items originated in California.

It looks as though no one will reply to my question. Perhaps I will post it in a new topic I am just curious about grading and the premiums refered to in the above topic

No. A normal collector with unaided 20/20 vision would have an extremely difficult time telling a Grade 95 from a Grade 100.

All it takes is an interest in learning how to look at stamps with grading in mind and several months of studying how to do so. It's a philatelic skill, and like any other it can be learned.

Thanks for the replies I guess I was wondering if you could tell the difference in centering of a 95% stamp to a 100% stamp by eye or do you mneed a microscope to measure it. Assuming the stamsp are 100% in all other details.

Telling a 100 from a 98 can be very tough, but telling a 98 from a 95 or less can be learned as stated above. It takes a lot of practice. Turning the stamp to look at it from all four sides is a big part of it.
