All,

Was looking at canx dates for my calendar collection and ran across the below.

Appears to be a Jan 5, 1862 manuscript canx - a date that obviously can't legitimately exist.

My guess is it should actually be Jan 3, 1863 and the clerk did what we all have done a few 1000 times - forgot to use the new year.

Thoughts?

I agree. Although it is possible that it could be back dated, it is definitely more likely that it is 1863 and like you said, written accidentally. No way to know without the document it was on.

One of the big dogs will have to weigh in, but I am pretty sure there were no tax requirements requiring a tax stamp in Jan 1862...

Hi, not even likely, and of course it might very well be back dated. How about Nov 5, 62, but again not likely, would have to been a very fast writing example. Guess we will never know.

How many times over the decades did I misdate a January check as the previous year, forgetting that the year had changed. January 5 is fresh enough that I'd bet my next paycheck that is what happened here.

Exactly. And agree the date written is definitely "Jan 5".

Either answer is possible, but being forgetful is more likely.

I agree with the forgetful sentiment. That is far more likely than a back date.

Ron,

Could there even be anything to backdate it to?

There were no taxes in effect in Jan 1862 that required stamps were there?

Thanks!

A document written in January of 1862 that was amended later and needed a tax stamp after July 1, 1862 might have been back dated to the original date of the document. This was not uncommon in the early days when the laws were not well understood by the average person.
