Hello, after I found the grill on my 90c Perry I learned how faint grill point can be and looked at other banknote stamps. On three of them I found "areas" you could call a grill. At least I see grill points. They are all not in the middle of the stamp. Now as there is more experience about that here in the forum I show some images and ask just whether these could be grill points on them, or on which not? (Could it also be paper structure?) This is just for the first thoughts, I will do more investigation and show then (hopefully) better scans or photos, also from the front, when I know that I am on the right way. Especially the last stamp is difficult to me (last 2 photos show the same stamp). Kind regards, stamperix

first two probably yes, last stamp, probably no, but you might try holding one with a clear grill next to it and see if you can see an alignment between the two. |

Hello and thank you for your answer and the hint. I tried so. But this "possible grill area" is really very hard to get on pictures. In real life you can see it quite well, but it's so faint that the camera (and scanner) does not show it, especially in detailed view. That's why I just put my images together in small sizes, as then you can see more or less what I see in real. Can you or anyone see now if this could be a grill? By the way the right stamp is the one I showed some time ago, and I still count 18 rows there, if the two things at the bottom are grill lines :). |

OK, I'd upgrade my view from probably no, to maybe, but you are right - the scans just aren't getting down to the level to be sure. I've had some success shining a light at a sharp angle and photographing at an angle. I'm not sure I'd recommend the graphite trick here since even a tiny bit of finger pressure might have a negative impact on what little is there. Grilled banknotes demand a premium over non-grilled, so certainly worth pursuing further. |

While the marks appear in a grill like pattern (rows and columns) they seem smaller or finer than the grill along side them, and also do not look raised like the grill points are. More like they were pressed onto a surface having that texture, like cloth. |

Stampguy, grill marks or just grills as they are called are also mentioned in the introduction of the Scott Specialized Catalog.

Hello everybody, this was really again a good learning session, for me and for others, thank you. After all, and also the aluminium foil and graphite test, I think the third stamp has no grill. Also I read that the 5c has only J grills which are always very strong. At the beginning I thought it could be a faint H grill on the 5c. Still I show one last photo I took - I agree, older US stamps are really a miracle sometimes and a real science. The other two stamps have clearly grill areas, so I guess H grills. the 5c again: |
