The detection method for Penny Blacks is to be able to tell the difference between engraved printing and lithography or typography.

It is then important to be able to tell if a cancel has been removed, and to be able to detect faults and repairs. This is not always easy when buying somewhere like on ebay.

- Quality? A wide range is possible.
- If you want to save money, buy one already reported as having small faults with a nice-looking face.

Overall, you might look for a dealer with a long history, rather than trying to buy at auction. Then it's up to you to get a little idea of retail pricing vs. quality.

A significant nuber of 1d Black forgeries appeared at the beginning of the 20th century. There are two types, but I suspect that they were made by the same person(s). The first are lithographic - printed on soft white unwatermarked paper. The shade is Grey-Black. The second type is Photographic, made from a photograph of genuine stamps from Plate 9. They are on thin photographic paper. The shade is Intense/Deep Black. Photographic forgeries are easy to detect - place one in the palm of your hand and your body heat will cause the photographic paper to curl! Both types usually have a forged watermark hand-painted on the reverse. Collectors who have never seen a genuine Penny Black can be quite easily duped by these. These forgeries also exist in strips and blocks, both on and off piece. Michael Aldred
