Mount Ruapehu made headlines around the world in 1995 when it began spitting rocks and steam. Volcanic activity reached a peak at the end of September 1995 with plumes of ash and steam reaching heights of 19 km. Ruapehu's volcanic activity intensified again in early 1996, with a flood of mud and boulders moving down the Whangaehu River in late April. During June, moderate-sized ash eruptions occurred, with lava bombs ejected 100-500 metres above the volcano's vent.

This $10 definitive stamp features a striking aerial photograph of the eruption in June 1996.

I lived down-wind of the volcano - about 150 kilometres away but still got a lot of ash on the house and car

Romania 1971, "Babele" rock formation on the Bucegi Plateau.

The 3.5 metres high rock formation is called "Babele" (meaning old woman). The formation is shaped in limestone, enduring in a harsh environment with snow all year round, with temperatures around 2.6 degrees Celsius below zero, strong winds and frequent storms in winter.

Check out these great photos

Arrived in the mail today:

According to the Iceland website:

Printing process: Offset Litho + volcanic ash silk screen printed

The volcanic events in Eyjafjallajökull which started in March 2010 are considered to be a single eruption divided into different phases. The first phase started on March 20 with a relatively small eruption on Fimmvörduháls. Additional localised disruptions continued for a few weeks. Beginning on April 14th the eruption entered a second phase, creating an enormous ash cloud that led to the closure of most of Europe's IFR airspace for a few days - the highest level of air travel disruption since the Second World War. This phase resulted in an estimated 250 million cubic metres of ejected tephra with the ash plume rising to a height of approx. 9 kilometres. Thick layer of ash fell on some Icelandic farms and pastures, making it very difficult to continue farming, harvesting or grazing livestock. Hundreds of farmers and their families in the worst affected areas had to be evacuated. By 21 May 2010, the second eruption phase had died down, indicating that the volcano had become dormant again.
