Quote: I imagine the top just got missed (lack of ink) in the strike. I doubt it. Unlisted hammer impression, only example of "Time at bottom" is a machine slogan. File this under "Unknown" at the moment. RENFREWSHIRE has many differing strikes, this one unrecorded. The "45 ? " is unidentified, I am presuming a time string. The Date Text is rather large too, overall, a rather unusual style Pmk. Bear in mind this stamp is a DUAL USE, it may be a revenue cancellation. |

Hi Rod and Just_fella,
I'd guess the Renfrewshire cancellation is a postal one possibly from a packet or parcel.
The listings in Collect British Postmarks in chapter 9 under "Blackwell datestamp Period 1" look promising, especially the descriptions under "Period 1" and the non-illustrated type 9/69 (and also the illustrations for the later 9/70 and 9/74):
Period 1: Approx. 1900 to 1980s - this is distinguished by having the month in three letters, no stop, year as two digits, and the date is composed of loose type, known more usually as "packet handstamp" or "soft packet handstamp". 9/69 Early packet handstamp, approx. 1900-1940 (various types)

Nigel! Your knowledge gives me real joy, on occasions ! Had not even considered that. (saved) Thank you. JF: I'll send that off to Allan, for inclusion in the database, along with Nigel's observations. |

Hi Bobby, Yep! that's what I thought, (6.45pm) but in the context of my original assumption, that it was a normal CDS, that just did not make sense.
Now Nigel has solved the query, it does (to some degree)
I still find it odd to place a time slug on a "soft paper" stamp/hammer.
...and I have yet to see another, in catalogue, or otherwise. perhaps it is a developed variety of image 153 above, and changed the alpha time code, to numeric.
