Hello
Both stamps carry the name Mauritanie. Am I right to assume that the small print refers to AOF stamp issued in Mauritania's region, but while it wasn't separated from the others, and belonged to the AOF entity?

You are essentially correct, except that "Mauritanie" just refers to the location of the scene. It could be used anywhere in French West Africa.

Thanks. I have several AOF stamps with small print, like Sudan, and wasn't sure where to place them. Now I know.

The one on the left is from French West Africa, while the one on the right is particular to Mauritania.

As Greaden posted, Mauritania is a distinctive Country (now Islamic Republic of Mauritania since 1958).
French West Africa was under French colonial administration until in 1958 and included these former colonies: Senegal, French Guinea, Ivory Coast, Dahoney, Sudan Francais or French Sudan, Niger and Upper Volta......and Mauritania.

So French West Africa named those places as regions of AOF.

You can see a similar case on AEF stamps, including region names that did not become a free state, like Mayumbe.

We are talking about Countries here, not regions. Kingdom of Dahomey is now present-day country of Benin. French Sudan is now the Country of Mali.Upper Volta is now the Republic of Upper Volta. Some African countries have changed names through the years and one can easily get mixed up !

I meant that Senegal, Mauritania, Sudan and so were regions inside AOF. Some regions became free states, and some, like Mayumbe, were absolved in a differently named country.

I was not referring to you, Rob, but to many of us in North America. A lot of people do not know the Countries of Africa - cheers

At http://www.dcstamps.com there are great transition charts that show which country came from which "dead" country. Helped me a lot.
