I didn't see many China stamps of this type before... any idea how to name it or how to describe it? It is printed on a self-adhesive label (if that is not clearly visible from the scan).
Filipo, this looks like a commemorative meter. I have never seen one like this (a souvenir) before.
According to Michel Automatenmarken-Spezial Katalog, People's Republic of China didn't issue their first computer-vended stamp until December 30, 1999. It was a German-type label, dispensed from the Nagler N714 machine.
To be clear, a meter is dispensed by a postal employee at the time a letter or package is mailed. It is dated and applied to the parcel at that time. Computer vended stamps are purchased by the user from a stand-alone machine (or, sometimes from a postal employee at his/her machine) and they can be used at any time in the future.
Yes... meters or machines or freistemepel (on German)... they are one thing, and automatenmarken or "computer vended" (is that a name for them on English?) are much newer things... in Germany from the start of 1980-ies... in China not before 1999., as you have said, bookbndrbob.
Btw. this small panda looks very similar to Misha the Bear, who was an original mascot for the Olymic Games 1980 in Soviet Republic.
