When I first started bidding at auction, it bothered me when I'd not get an item that I really wanted. After awhile, I pretty much slapped myself in the face, and realized that I'm doing this for fun, so it needs to be fun! Since that epiphany, I've never had issues with not winning a bid. I allow myself 30-seconds after a lot closes, which I didn't win, to get over it. After that, I very much enjoy that my bank account is still intact. I agree that the hunt and pursuit of an item can be extremely fun.
Hi txstamp, gone are the days of the old stamp store. Where I could go and talk about stamps. Sometimes I'd buy a stamp there and the owner would tell me a story about the stamp in question.
Wish I could see my old friends again and talk about stamps.

I keep 5 -10 years of past stamp auction catalog and look for collections that rarely or ever been up in previous auctions . The excitement of mounting and adding something rarely seen by others makes for a unique worldwide collection .
or waiting for that one lot, item number 1272, checking progress every few minutes, then after what seemed like a short distraction, I log in and they're on item 1274 and my item sold for less than I was willing to bid. Ouch.
