I have this airmail cover from 1946. Dated cancels are on the back. The stamp however is cancelled wit a mute oval cancel. Is this normal or specific for a certain kind of cover/postal service? Thank you for your time/response. Kind regards, Johan.
The cover was registered. USPOD regulations at that time required that postmarks showing the point of mailing and date were not to be placed on the front of the cover, supposedly to force the clerk to check the reverse for the postmarks and to ensure that the seal had not been tampered with and was intact.
