Auctions are a very good source of information especially on philatelic material that has not have been seen for many years. The Baron Collections of Selected Canadian Imperforates, Major Errors and First Day Covers by Eastern Auctions Ltd. on October 28, 2016 is one such auction. The following are both front and back scans of Canada Scott/Unitrade 162ii and 197e (Die II) from Eastern Auctions courtesy of Yohann Tanguay. The catalogue says that Unitrade 162ii is without (w/o) gum, but the above scan shows that it has Stickney rotary (wet) press gum. The catalogue says that Unitrade 197e (Die II) is flat plate (dry) press (printed), but the above scan shows that it has Stickney rotary (wet) press gum.

Jogil, will this finding be worth adding a note in the 2018 catalogue (or in the "correction" bulletins that sometimes occur after printing? |

Gilles le timre: The Unitrade editor has been emailed about this. It is hoped that this is corrected in their upcoming catalogue descriptions for these stamps. The absence of horizontal gum breakers on these stamps may have confused some into thinking that they were flat plate instead of rotary press.

Does anyone know if the 163d and 197b corner plate blocks are listed in the 2017 Unitrade Canada stamp catalogue? |

My Unitrade for 2017 lists 163d as an imperf pair Die II(estimated 50 pairs known). It also lists #197b as an imperf pair Die I rotary press (150 pairs known)
Hope this helps?

What does the 2017 Unitrade Canada Specialized Stamp Catalogue say about 162ii and 197e? |

Out of curiosity, I decided to look at my copy of THE BARON COLLECTIONS of Selected Canadian Imperforates, Major Errors and First Day Covers (I collect FDCs) auction catalogue from Eastern Auctions Ltd. for 10/28/16 to see what all this fuss is about and in it this is what I found that these experts say on page 29:
THE ONLY KNOWN IMPERFORATE DIE II OF THE THREE CENT MEDALLION
82* 197e, 1932 3c Deep Brown Red Medallion, Flat Press, Die II Mint imperforate block of four, some gum wrinkling and small thin mostly confined to top margin, nevertheless the ONLY KNOWN EXAMPLE of the imperforate Three cent Medallion, Die II in existence - last sold in September 1981 and since then kept in the family collection, VF OG Est. 7,500.00+
It has been previously reported that this block came from a regularly issued sheet, partially imperforate and discovered in a Winnipeg post office. However, we feel this is unlikely. This block is flat press and all issued sheets were rotary press. Only the booklet panes and coil stamps were printed by flat press. More research needs to be done.
AN IMPORTANT AND UNIQUE BLOCK - THE RAREST ITEM OF THE MEDALLION SERIES AND AT PAR WITH THE GREATEST RARITIES OF THE ENTIRE KING GEORGE V ERA.
Thus, the experts of Eastern Auctions, Unitrade, etc. have a different opinion than the OP and I go with these experts since the OP did get these scans from Eastern Auctions. When someone on here contradicts the experts, I am with the experts on this one. |

CANADA150: Sorry, no expert is perfect. The British American Bank Note Company (BABNC) printed all stamps from 1930 to 1934 from Scott/Unitrade # 162 to # 210, except for # 184.
Above you quoted: "This block is flat press and all issued sheets were rotary press. Only the booklet panes and coil stamps were printed by flat press. More research needs to be done."
RE: "Only the booklet panes and coil stamps were printed by flat press." In the 2016 Unitrade Specialized Catalogue of Canadian Stamps, on page 20 is written "More recently, coil stamps were printed on rotary presses which print from two identical curved plates fastened to opposite halves of the rotary cylinder. On coils of the Arch Issue (178-183) and the Medallion Issue (205-207) a line of colour appears between the end stamps of the two plates because ink would build up in the recesses between the two plates. The resulting "line pairs" are sought by coil specialists and are listed herein."
RE: "This block is flat press and all issued sheets were rotary press. On page 25 of the same catalogue is written "Certain values of the "Arch" or "Leaf" issue (1930) and the "Medallion" issue (1932) were produced using two different types of printing press. "Flat Press".... "Rotary Press"....
RE: "Only the booklet panes and coil stamps were printed by flat press." On page 97 of the same catalogue is listed # 164ai as a rotary press booklet pane.
I agree with "More research needs to be done."
With regards to # 197e, I still stand with my original aforementioned above observations. |

Such sheet stamp imperforates, unless they are purposely passed through the gum breaker bars on the web-fed Stickney bar and wheel perforator, they will not have gum breaker lines on their gum since this was a perforator operation rather than a printing press one. The absence of these lines have confused some into thinking that these were flat plate printed instead of Stickney rotary press printed. This may also be why the aforementioned auction catalogue said that the related coils were flat plate printed since the coils do not have gum breaker lines on them since they are expected to curl in rolls rather than stay flat like stacked stamp panes should. |
