I've got many sources for identifying the places in Hungary cancels, but this one eludes me. Can anyone ID this partial?: ...tömeggyes Thanks in advance>
tömeg or tömegge means bulk or weight. Can it be that the cancellation referred to parcel or bulk shipment? Did cancellations at those years indicate such feature?
Thanks for your information, Rob Roy. I've run into other Hungary postmarks where the cancel info refers to a service rather than a location, so this is probably one of those. Certainly haven't been able to find anyplace with "tomeggyes" in its name.
Maybe it's for the best: I pity the people that would have lived in a village called "Heavy load". Can you show that other postmark, just to widen my horizons? I'm sure that members of this forum that specialize in mid-Europe of that period can shed some light on the nature of cancellation in those countries.
Rob Roy: Alas, I no longer have those stamps & don't recall what the services were. If I run across more, I'll post them. Having ascertained that the cancel wasn't IDing a town, I would have moved on to other stamps in my endless search. BTW, my "Gazetteer Collection" is almost at 70,000 examples at the moment.
perf 12: Pasztomeggyes is a good idea! I'll add that to my research on that stamp. I wasn't able to find that word on Google, but that's not definitive. Could be a place that no longer is so named or no longer exists. Could be a spelling problem. I must also thank you for the 2 links you provided. They will be valuable additions to my research resources.
