Argentine Types

Its amazing the amusement a simpleton like me can get from a couple of 5 cent stamps...a collector of long ago put together a glassine of 40 cent denomination stamps from Argentina and he cataloged them either Scott 630 red lithograph from 1956 or scott 631 Bright red typo from 1955....if you check the catalog its interesting that the 630 is from 1956 and the 631 from 1955..i suppose theres a reason for everything. I can not tell you which is the Lithographed stamp and which is the Typo..the stamp on the right has a date ..ether 56 or 58 but the stamps are only a year apart..so as far as I know it could be either one..the detail and the printing is much sharper on the stamp on the right..perhaps someone with more experience of printing could identify which is which !!

T'aint easy. Lithography tends to be brighter, and clearer (sharper) in appearance. Typography is 'rougher' and duller. I look for the impression to be pressed into the typographed stamps by looking at the back with fairly high magnification (10x) and at an angle. Also look for a jagged lie appearance in at wide edges such as numerals of typographed stamps where the lithographed will be much smoother. And practice, practice, practice....

cgrotha...thanks, I looked for impression on the backs..but only with naked eye..did not think to use magnifier !!

One more characteristic that's helpful that slipped my old mind last night came to me this morning at my workout session. Since lithographed stamps are surface printed, look for ink to be 'piled up' on the surface in at least some places, usually framelines. Again you'll have more luck with 10X magnification. And Tina, though it's pretty dry stuff, the material at the front of the Scott catalog is worth a read.

wow, many thanks keijo, really amazing stuff. I will download and read the info and then I will turn to my huge amount of Argentine duplicates and try to identify all the different subtypes :-)
It is a lousy summer over here, but at least I have something to do now...

Keijo You are a saint ! The Latin American countries are becoming a very hot item....APS members are asking for stamps for their sales department..i know collectors who collect anything related to Santa Evita ..i think you have given us the Roseta stone to Argentine stamps !!

Jan-Simon its a lousy summer here also...so many thunder and lightning storms..very little sunshine....

If you think Argentina is *fun*, just wait till you knock yourself out with early Brazilian definitives... I think some types have nearly 30 different watermarks (not to mention different positions of watermarks, perforation varieties, different printing methods etc)... They will definitely provide fun for eons...LOL

I know, I collect both Argentina and Brazil. At my stampclub there is one guy who collects Argentina (his wife is Argentinian) but except for him interest in South American stamps is very limited over here. And that is a pity. It is far more challenging, even when you try to collect at a "simple" level. The Argentinian ministeriales for instance: they are not easy to find in the Netherlands... And there are a lot of them
