"The National Association For The Prevention of Mendicancy and Charitable Imposture" set of four stamps.

Lithographed by the American Bank Note Company, with a certain symbol in the design that was later defiled by a certain person.

Bet you didn't know what mendicancy means, without googling it.

OK, I HAD to look it up:

mendicancy
[#712;mend#601;k(#601;)ns#275;]
DEFINITION
noun form of mendicant

men·di·cant
[#712;mend#601;k#601;nt]
ADJECTIVE
given to begging.
NOUN
a beggar.
synonyms: panhandler · mendicant · tramp · vagrant · vagabond · hobo · scrounger · [more]

"That" symbol was actually used a lot prior to "that" person hijacking it. It can even be seen on Native American art!

The Nazi symbol rotates in the opposite direction. They are slightly different.

I suspect that it goes back earlier then that, to at least paleolithic times in Europe, 15,000 years ago. Also found in other parts of Europe from about 8,000 years ago. Ancient good luck symbol.

My bad, sorry.

Never figured that there were clockwise and counter clockwise versions of this symbol.

Should have researched more.

Jim

p.s. But the stamps are still pretty unusual...

Thanks for posting the information on these labels. I had seen the labels before, but could never figure out the purpose, or who was responsible for them.

I knew what mendicancy meant only because in my teaching days, I had a student from South America who used the the word in reference to another student.
