Show Your Newly Acquired Covers Here

I searched and couldn't find a thread where everyone could Show off covers they have recently acquired from swaps/auctions, fairs, etc., so..I thought I would start one!

I'll start,

This one came today, a smallish "Ladies" cover.
Got it on ebay for $1.50!
I think its a ripper!

There is the "Cover Calendar for month and day" thread now 136 pages long where I've posted almost a complete year. I have another that will go in that thread next week.

But I'll post my last auction lots from Jim Mehrer's Postal History Mail sale, a steady supplier, always post cards but they became an important part of the mail stream thru the turn of the last century.

So with no further ado, last month I added these four cards, 3 from Mendocino County and one from Humboldt.

Would you be interested in having a data base established on Stamp Smarter in which members could insert their "newly acquired" of "favorite" U.S. covers? We could use this thread for comments and discussion of them.

Don Denman and others have developed a draft data base format about ready to test out. The purpose of this data base project is to define a minimal number of "core" data elements detailing images of covers. Each participating data base covering a geographic area or philatelic topic could add "custom" data elements specific to their subject.

If folks develop a series of specialized data bases built around this core architecture it would be possible to write reports extracting information from many data bases based on the common "core" elements. Collectors interested in a particular state or city or whatever would greatly benefit from this approach.

Some "core" data elements" need further definition. We need to develop a list of "cover types" so similar items can be sorted out. Many of these cover types would be a natural candidate for another data base given their specific subject related "custom" data elements.

Lawrence and all, what are your thoughts on this concept and using your newly acquired or favorite covers for this test?

I'd be happy to contribute, I have around 400 to 500 US covers, many postally used, RPO's and APO's, a hundred or so Crosby Covers and other artcrafts and various FDC's, let me know what you want me to do.

just to let you know, your post is pretty technical, and I find it a bit difficult to decipher so could we work on the KISS principle and use lay speak please? I'm not at all tech savvy!
It sounds like a Data base with several different ways to search, is that correct?
for uploading we could use cloudbased tech?

I have such a collection. Currently 557 various type of covers and card from a small geographical area indexed by decade and date. Most can be seen in the thread I linked above. I'd be glad to share what information I have.

Thanks for the interest. The data base is an "alpha" test for more capable versions hopefully soon to come. The objective is for folks to be able to post items that can then be sorted out by area of interest as desired. The devil is in the details; or more specifically, establishing the "core" fields that need to be filled out consistently so all of the widgets are entered as widgets so they show up in the desired report.

The 6 PM Central Time cancel was the same hour as 7 PM Eastern time. President Truman made the official announcement at 7 PM Eastern of Japan's surrender on August 15. I've seen several 6 PM cancels from Chicago so this cover as well as many others appear to have been timed to match Truman's announcement.

There are 3 dates related to Japan's surrender:
Aug 15 is the date Emperor Hirohito released to the public a recorded message of surrender.
Aug 14 in the US is the same day as Aug 15 in Japan since the new day begins on the International Dateline in the Pacific.
Sept 2 is the date that the surrender ceremony officially ending hostilities was signed onboard the US battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay

I have admired the design of the P-38 fighter which is why I chose this cover over others that were available.

Wow, Great cover and interesting story, I too have long admired the P38 lightning Also another favourite of mine is the Northrop Black Widow,I'm very jealous of that cover!
