Found A Collection Of State Revenues (Mainly Tn, Some Tx/Wa)

Hi! Like the title says, I found a collection in with a lot of things I bought from a local collector's sale. I'm very familiar with grading for records/books/coins and that 95% of things that are found in hobbies are common and not too desirable.

Many of the are uncut sheets, most have nice color and no creases, some are canceled/used. Most are TN from furs to liquor to seeds to inspections to tobacco (so much tobacco).

I'm reaching out for some help on state revenues.

1) Is there a market for TN specific state revenue stamps? ebay is difficult to gauge, it looks like there is.

2) Is the State Revenue Catalog by Dave Wrisley the definitive source? Scott's seems to mainly do US

3) Is there a "best" way to preserve them if there's anything of value?

I've attached a few pictures, I'm having issues getting too many pics here. There's probably 2-3k stamps total? Thanks for any and all input, it looks like a great communit!

Hi TNR, and welcome to the forum. I would suggest you become a member of the State Revenue Society. ith that many it would probably pay, especially if you are trying to sell.

Thanks for the replies! That was the main society that came up when I was searching around. It was difficult to tell if it was worth joining for the limited area of stamps that I have (TN and not other states really). I also can't tell if what I have really has some value or is most common/uninteresting from looking online.

Your tags for skunk, mink, etc. are cataloged and are priced at $50 and $55 apiece in unused condition. Skunk and mink at $55 and the others at $50. The rest of the material you picture seems fairly common. These tags were required for shipments of fur outside the state.

The liquor catalogs $1.50, more in line with what you probably expected.

Thanks so much! I may have to grab that catalog, if I can pry some more, would it be $1.50 each? As in a sheet of 10 would expect to fetch $10-20 depending on condition? I only ask because of the volume I'm seeing. I really, really appreciate the responses. There's a fair amount more fur stuff, I'll look at the society page.

The liquor price was for an unused single stamp. Yes, we know that they were issued in panes of 10. Yes, condition matters a great deal. State revenues are a very small niche of stamp collecting. So if you should have a hundred panes of 10, don't expect to sell all of them at premium prices.

As with most stamp catalogs, the more common material trades at a discount from catalog prices.

The scarcer material might be worth more in an ebay auction, if you find 2-3 people who are eager to own an example.

EDIT: I also wasn't sure how accurate the Revenue Stamp Catalog might be, I know they do out of date quick and before spending the money I wanted to check with those who know.

I am only aware of 1 collector who specializes in TN state revenues! That said, there are hunting and fishing collectors who collect all or many states, and some that focus on hunting tags.

Your fur tags are very, very nice! I have none in my collection (I foolishly collect the state tax stamps of all 50 states and DC).

There are many folks that collect by category, rather than state, like beer, liquor, wine, cigar, etc., and I have no doubt there will be collector interest in the TN stamps if the prices are reasonable.




Absolutely the most up to date general catalog for all 50 states and DC. Keep in mind there are specialist catalogs for single states that list minor varieties not found in the SRS catalog, but there is no specialist catalog for TN.




For the most part, stamps are stamps (yes - I know there are always exceptions), and any accepted safe practice for stamp collecting should be safe for state revenue stamps. NEVER use any scotch tape for anything involving stamps. Don't use hinges for better mint stamps. Be careful with heat activated "fusions" or water applied stamps (like your tobacco examples). Some of those are very fragile and just the sweat on your fingers will cause problems for some of these issues.

1,000 TN stamps is a very intriguing collection. Don't know if there are several sheets of 100 equaling over a 1,000, or if you managed to get your hands on a very specialized collection. Can you post some more scans of other pages?

There are nice issues in the early Cereal Seed, Grasses and Clovers, Oleomargarine, Ammo, etc. Almost all the tags (regardless of category) are decent.

I suggest you go to the SRS website (link above) and risk $26 for a year and a half membership. It will be good until Dec 2018. Do it. Do it now!

I wound up joining SRS and ordered a catalog to get a sense of what's what and how things are cataloged. The process was fluid and I just got the first magazine in the mail. I must admit that early on I had a passing interest in the subject but have already read 80% of the issue.

I'll try and get some more pictures up, after reviewing the catalog I believe I have 90-95% of all TN revenue stamps listed and some new ones to add (an unlisted Oleo and an Otter fur tag which isn't listed). This includes the rare malt stamps (having a sheet of 4 of what's listed as 10 known) and the initial ammo ones.

There tends to be an unused example of each, though most are hinged, which I'm not sure how much that affects value.

Including panes/sheets there's around 2,500 stamps, most being unique with a pane and then a single stamp and then a used version.

I am preparing a fair amount for sale as my interest is higher in other hobbies, that's not to say I haven't taken a genuine interest in this one. Thanks for the replies!


Opinion: Should I unhinge them for sale or just cut the sheet upon which they are hinged?

Secondary question: Are localities available for sale anywhere specific? I'd be interested in certain TN city specific ones.

I hope he sells it to Eric or someone else as a whole. A collection like that should remain intact. It would be so hard to build a set like that. It would be a shame to see it split up.

On second thought after seeing his website, Eric would just split it up and sell it. I would look for someone that would hold it together. However, Eric would better know the value and market. hmm.....

1) I agree, it's a great collection, some of the hinges aren't holding well and I put those into glassine or some that are especially "valuable". They were almost all already hinged some time ago.

2) Thought I had a new Oleo but don't, I DO have the Otter stamp/tag that was (apparently) assumed not used, some good blocks of shell stamps, and a block of the cigar stamps used for a few days and some other rare ones.
