Just thought I would share this cancellation with eveyone. I am going through the family collection of Canadian Stamps and I thought it was a great cancellation for Queen Victoria's Jubilee
It's a very pretty flag cancel, made by an "Imperial" machine. There are 4 varieties used at Montreal and 1 at Ottawa. Langford's 'Flag Cancel Encyclopedia', while primarily dedicated to US flags, also covers these in some level of detail. I'm sure there's other literature dedicated to Canadian flags...
According to the Lacelle Fancy Cancels Catalog, it is Catalog number 1394 and was used in Montreal between July and August 1897 only. Also known to be used in Ottawa.
Rod, the difference in the 4 and 4a dies are the date set up on 4 has the year at the bottom of the circle, while 4a includes the word CANADA and splits the year. Your page is from Holmes' I believe. Sessions also shows other variations in the dies. Serif and sanserif 7s in the year 1897 and differences in the number of strokes in the lower left furl of the flag - 5, 6 and 7.
