Dear Stamp Community Family

Is this really a 1852 Ham printing Victoria (crown colony in Australia)? Ok on the left hand side they cut too close. But it does'nt look bad for an 165 year old stamp. If it is real, it would be one of my oldest stamps. What do you think?

Thanks for any hint.

Best regards from Switzerland

André

Are you able to offer a better close up scan Andre?

If genuine, it can be one of only 2 plate positions.
Stamp#11 (stamp 1 row 2) or (stamp#35 (Stamp 5 Row 4)
Possibly can be plated, exist with rust flaws.

2 basic shade groups: Reddish Brown and Purple Brown

The Engraver : Thomas Ham

Stamps (State of Victoria) generally referred to as the "2d (tuppenny) Queen on Throne" which in reality is in error. (It is the Coronation Chair)

Majority Information Source : "The Australian Philatelist" 1988 Author : Mr. Geoff Kellow.

Dear rod222

I tried it with 1200dpi. But I have to go through Image Optimizer about the size. I hope it will help.

That's fine, thanks Andre.
May I keep that image for my records, please?

We are no closer to a solution. (Out of my depth)
My first impression is a forgery, but only a guess, I do not have enough "genuines" to compare.
Looks like a Lithograph,
1. Bottom of Right hand column is dodgy
2. There is very little shading on the Coronation chair.

Mr. Ham engraved each of the 50 stamp dies, (Yours either LP or KP)
ergo, each die is going to be different to some degree.

Here is one I believe genuine (engraved) (with "piecrust" cancel) you can download and "toggle" between the images to see the differences.
If it is a forgery, it seems a rather good one.
(Purple brown shade)

Maybe a Victoria specialist may chip in.... Our member BC ?

Maybe you get a reprieve?
The shading on the chair seems to have disappeared on the lithograph stone?

Dear rod222

Thank you very much for the link to an older thread. There I found a link from Bee See that led me to the website of Les Molnar (http://www.stampsofvictoria.com/queen.php). After consultation, he confirmed to me that in his opinion it is not a fake. After taking a closer look at his pictures of the Queen on the throne, I now assume that my copy is perhaps more of a Campbell print.

As usual, I appreciate your answer and your know-how for almost every philatelic topic over all masses.

Best regards from Switzerland

André

...and I, yours. Andre.

By your efforts regarding your scan, we can have your image as a "genuine"
which makes further issues that pop up, nice to compare with.

It is rewarding that you keep us in the loop with your results, it benefits all.
