Finding The Right Society To Join

Agree with Don. There are a lot of resons (medical or not) that prevent travelling, for me being the distance to the Club and schedules. I like the virtual discussions. But those that enjoy other means of a more face to face (sociable), it is fine with me.

APS member here since around 1988. I also rejoined the German Philatelic Society (GPS) early 2016 after dropping my membership in the 1990's. Both groups have excellent publications and have quite reasonable annual dues.

Though I admit, there are valid reasons to question the APS' recent actions. This forum's APS-related thread on the matter I've found to very informative and relatively civil.

I was also previously an active contributor to StampBoards, but I prefer the welcoming, non-intimidating circle of SCF collectors.

Don, I extend sincere apologies to anyone who is offended by thinking that I am sufficiently insensitive as to criticize any person with a disability or medical condition. I recognize that there are circumstances that prevent people from attending certain events, but I also recognize that there are often methods by which inconveniences (as opposed to impossibilities) can be overcome. My club (West Toronto) has members who would not attend because of their inability to drive so arrangements are made for other members to provide transport.
My point was, however, that there are some distinct advantages to membership in a local stamp club that cannot be enjoyed in a virtual club (again, this is not a criticism of virtual clubs). I believe that every collector should try a local club if it is physically and practically possible.
