I see a notation in the Scott Specialized Catalog mentioning a Retouched Variety for #692, Lower Left #20617 2,3.
Forgive me if this is a stupid question.... what does the 2.3 refer to. I am assuming that these are the positions where this variety occurs. Is that the 2nd and 3rd stamps from the upper left part of the sheet(with the upper leftmost stamp being number 1) or does that refer to the position within the plate block?
I believe it is positions 2 and 3 of the lower pane with plate number 20617. French illustrates and describes the variety on page 695 of his book Encyclopedia of plate varieties.
"Wouldn't a pane reference be need as well: UL, UR, LL, LR or similar".....
Well the pane reference and plate number is clear for in this case.... LL 20617 2,3
However, my question is a much more simple one...how are the positions "counted"? Which stamp is position x for a particular pane? Is the counting done by moving from the upper most left stamp(position 1) to the lower most right stamp(position 100 in this case).? My guess is that this is correct. Just want to be sure.
Thanks
Bob
ps The inclusion of the page from the French reference is much appreciated.
