On February 19, 1999 Greece issued a set of four stamps to commemorate the UN's "International Year of the Ocean". The 200 drachma value (Sc #1929) of this set depicts the Greek oceanographic vessel Aigaio. In recent years, Aigaio has been monitoring rising temperatures in the Mediterranean, Adriatic, and Black Seas.

This September 19, 1990 stamp (Sc #992) of Peru depicts the Peruvian Navy (MGP) vessel Morona (ABH302), a river hospital ship serving the civilian populace along the Amazon River. It is one of five MGP hospital ships currently in service.

The obliteration and 1989 date in the lower right corner show that this is a stamp which was prepared for release with a value of 400 inti, but the hyperflation of the period caused it to be surcharged at 230,000 inti at the time of issuance.

Josef Ressel (1793 – 1857)

Josef Ludwig Franz Ressel was a Bohemia-born Austrian forester and inventor who designed one of the first working ship's propellers. He worked as a forester in the southern parts of the monarchy. In 1821, he was transferred to Trieste, the biggest port of the Austrian Empire, where he tested his ship propellers. He was awarded a propeller patent in 1827. He modified a steam-powered boat, Civetta, by 1829 and test-navigated it in the Trieste harbor at six knots before the steam conduits exploded. He died in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia.
