Georges Henri Rouault (1871-1958) was a French Fauvist and Expressionist painter. Here is an image of a stamp depicting Rouault's 1946 painting Songe creux (Note: This name is commonly translated into English as "The Dreamer," but a closer meaning might be "The Visionary"), engraved by Robert Cami, and issued by France on June 7, 1971 to commemorate Rouault's birth centenary, Scott No. 1297, Y&T No. 1673, plus a photo of the original work of art.

Here is an image of a stamp depicting a painting entitled Saltim-banque ("Street performer," or "Busker"), by renowned Japanese artist Seiji Togo (1897-1978), printed by photogravure, and issued by Japan on November 24, 1982, Scott No. 1500, plus an image of Togo's painting Self-portrait (1914).

Here are images of an engraved stamp designed after a painting entitled "The Immaculate Conception of Aranjuez," by Spanish Baroque painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617–1682), issued by Philippines on December 30, 1954 in celebration of the Marian Year ordered by Pope Pius XII, Scott No. 617, SG No. 600, plus a photo of Murillo's masterpiece.

Our Roberto Matta!

Chilean artist Roberto Matta Echaurren (1911 - 2002). One of the most renowned Surrealist painters of all time. Known as Matta, dedicated himself to exploring the powerful inner world of the subconscious on canvas. But Matta took the movement one step further, promoting a technique called "automatic painting," in which he attempted to work without thinking. Matta believed that by painting on sheer impulse - with no fore-thought - he could capture the unconscious mind at work. For Matta, this technique yielded a lifetime of peculiar, often hallucinatory images, whose originality greatly influenced the 20th-century art world.

Here is an image of a stamp designed after a painting entitled "Moon searching for lilies of the valley" (1913) by Czech painter, graphic artist, and illustrator Jan Zrzavý (1890-1977), engraved by Josef Hercík, and issued by Czechoslovakia on January 28, 1971, Scott No. 1729.

The Bayon is a richly decorated Khmer temple at Angkor in Cambodia built in the late 12th century or early 13th century as the official state temple of the Mahayana Buddhist King Jayavarman VII; the Bayon stands at the center of Jayavarman's capital, Angkor Thom. Here is an image of a stamp depicting a bas-relief from the Bayon, printed by lithogravure, and issued by Cambodia on April 3, 2004 as one of a set of five stamps celebrating Khmer culture, Scott No. 2210. The subject of this bas-relief appears to be a cockfight.

Here is an image of an engraved stamp depicting a metal sculpture entitled El Profeta ("The Prophet," 1933) by Spanish sculptor and painter Pablo Gargallo (1881-1934), issued by Spain on December 9, 1982 to commemorate Gargallo's birth centenary, Scott No. 2311, plus a photo of the sculpture. Note the distortion and the misplacement of the position of shepherd's hook in the stamp's design!

Here is an image of a stamp (with label) depicting an allegorical figure and a keg by a well, designed by Jerzy Desselberger after an oil painting entitled "The Poisoned Well" (1906), by Polish Symbolist artist Jacek Malczewski (1854-1929), engraved by Eugeniusz Tirdiszek, and issued by Poland on August 15, 1962 to publicize FIP Day (Fédération Internationale de Philatélie) on September 1, Scott No. 1078, SG No. 1326, plus a photo of Malczewski's painting.

Spain 2012 (July 18th) - This series devoted to contemporary art depicts paintings and sculptures by Manolo Valdés in a souvenir sheet with four stamps.

Here is an image of an engraved stamp depicting Alexander the Great on horseback at the battle of Issos, issued by Greece on November 1, 1937, Scott No. 404, SG No. 507, plus a photo of the original artwork after which this stamp was designed, a bas-relief from the Alexander Sarcophagus, located in the Istanbul Archaeological Museum.

"March of the Pori Regiment," designed by Olavi Vepsäläinen after a painting (1892) by Finnish artist Albert Gustaf Aristides Edelfelt (1854-1905) illustrating a scene from the epic poem Tales of Ensign Stål by Finnish poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg (1804-1877), engraved by Stig Rönnberg, and issued by Finland on March 8, 1958 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the military unit now known as the Pori Brigade, Scott No. 356, Facit No. 495, plus an image of the original painting.
