The "Venus of Brassempouy" is a fragmentary ivory figurine from the Upper Palaeolithic discovered in a cave at Brassempouy, France in 1892. About 25,000 years old, it is one of the earliest known realistic representations of a human face and hairstyle. Here is an image of a stamp depicting this figurine, designed and engraved by Georges Bétemps, and issued by France on March 6, 1976, Scott No. 1465, Y&T No. 1868, plus photos of the front and side views of the figurine.

Happy Mothering Day to all my friends in the UK! Here is an image of a stamp depicting mother and child, designed and engraved by Pierre Gandon after a painting by American artist Mary Stevenson Cassatt (1844-1926), and issued by Monaco on May 3, 1977 to honor the World Association of Children's Friends (or AMADE, in French: Association Mondiale des Amis de l'Enfance), founded in 1963 by Princess Grace of Monaco, Scott No. 1060, plus an image of Cassatt's 1897 painting.

The newest in the "Masterpieces of Canadian Art" series features a delightful woodcut print, entitled York Boat on Lake Winnipeg, by Walter Joseph Phillips (1884-1963). Phillips was one of the first artists to import the Asian woodcut process to describe the Canadian landscape. Born in England, Phillips emigrated to Canada in 1913, selecting Winnipeg as his home. He taught art at St. John's Technical High School and made weekend excursions to the rural areas.

Diego Rivera (1886-1957) was a prominent Mexican painter whose large wall works in fresco helped establish the Mexican Mural Movement in Mexican art. Here is an image of a stamp depicting a detail from Diego Rivera's mural portrait of Mexican Roman Catholic priest and revolutionary rebel leader José María Teclo Morelos y Pavón (1765-1815), printed by photogravure, and issued by Mexico on December 22, 1965, Scott No. 967, plus images of the detail from Rivera's mural, another painting of Morelos (Anonymous, 19th century), and a photo of Rivera taken in 1932. Note: Some critics think Rivera's mural portrait looks more like the artist himself than it does Morelos. You be the judge!

Cardinal Richelieu

Armand-Jean du Plessis, Duc de Richelieu (1585 - 1642), was made a cardinal in 1622. He became chief minister to King Louis XIII of France and as such enjoyed considerable success implementing reforms in France, particularly in terms of the administrative structure of the government. He also secured the country's position abroad by ensuring that the German states were not united under Habsburg control, and by successfully prosecuting French interests during the Thirty Years War.

Maurice de Vlaminck (4 April 1876 – 11 October 1958) was a French painter. Along with André Derain and Henri Matisse he is considered one of the principal figures in the Fauve movement, a group of modern artists who from 1904 to 1908 were united in their use of intense color.

I'm surprised that the French Post Office still allows these old franc denominations on the mail, eleven years after the introduction of the Euro.

But who knows, maybe they're getting ready to reintroduce the Franc again.

The Richelieu is Scott 1394 and the other Still Life by Maurice de Vlaminck is Scott 1468

It is neat that France still allows the use of Franc denminated stamps on their mail. Some of the older stamps look nice after all these years.

The Farmer's Family is the centre panel of an expressionist triptych created by Bobak. It presents a farmer and his wife in a warm embrace. In the full triptych, this portrait is juxtaposed against an initial image of the farmer with his hogs, and a third portrait of the farmer's children.

Polish-born, Bobak immigrated to Canada early in life and became fascinated with Canadian rural life. "It was so foreign to the urban lifestyle I grew up with and yet it was so complete: a self-contained world of survival, unity and tenderness," he said.

"Bobak's work is not an illustration of an actual event or an actual place, but a symbol of survival in a cold and rugged country," says Curtis J. Collins, curator of the Beaverbook Art Gallery in New Brunswick where the painting now hangs.

The Water Tower at Bremen (1931), an oil painting by German magical realism artist Franz Radziwill (1895-1983), printed by lithography, and issued by Germany on January 12, 1995 to commemorate Radziwell's birth centenary, Scott No. 1878. Note: Curiously, although the Nazis labeled his paintings "degenerate art" and banned their exhibition, Radziwell joined the Party and served in it as an official.

Here is an image of a stamp depicting a study by Italian artist Raphael (1483-1520) for his oil painting Venus and Psyche (1517), designed and engraved by Claude Haley, and issued by France on April 9, 1983, Scott No. 1865, Y&T No. 2264 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the artist's birth, plus a detail from Raphael's finished painting, which shows Venus's surprise as Psyche presents her with the flask of water from the River Styx.
