Jerzy Nowosielski (1923-2011) was a Polish painter, graphic artist, scenographer, and illustrator. Here is an image of a stamp depicting Nowosielski's painting "The Cellist" (1960), printed by lithography, and issued by Poland on July 27, 1970, Scott No. 1763.

Happy Mother's Day!

Here is an image of a stamp depicting a detail from Die Mutterliebe ("Mother Love," 1839), an oil painting on canvas by Austrian artist Josef Danhauser (1805-1845), engraved by Hans Ranzoni the Younger, and issued by Austria on May 1, 1935, Scott No. 376, plus a photo of the original painting.

Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin (1699-1779) was a French painter who is considered a master of still life. Here is an image of a semi-postal (charity) stamp reproducing Chardin's Self-portrait (1775), designed by Paul-Pierre Lemagny, engraved by Claude Hertenberger, and issued by France on June 9, 1956, Scott No. B306, Y&T No. 1069, plus an image of the original painting.

Born 1483 and dying at a young 37, Raphael was known as "The Divine" for his skill in rendering religious subjects. His habit of striking, bright colors and painting his subjects with a softness unseen before made him stand out from other Florentine painters.

Madonna of the Goldfinch is considered one of his greatest, if not THE greatest, example of Raphael's style. Lovingly restored in 2008 a brighter and bolder side of this work is now being displayed in the Raphael wing of the Uffizi Gallery, Hall #66.

Hard to see in this stamp's resolution are the halos and cheery countenance of the Christ on his mother's hip.

Heinrich Vogeler (1872-1942) was a German painter, designer, and architect, associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting. Here is an image of a stamp reproducing Vogeler's painting Sommerabend (Summer Evening, 1905), printed by lithography, and issued by Germany on July 13, 1989 to commemorate the centenary of the Worpswede Artists' Colony, Scott No. 1584.

Discobolus, by Alcamenes, an ancient Greek sculptor of Lemnos and Athens, who flourished in the 2nd half of the 5th century BC.


Doryphoros ("Spear bearer"), by Polykleitos, called the Elder, a Greek sculptor in bronze of the fifth and the early 4th century BCE.


The Borghese Gladiator, a Hellenistic life-size marble sculpture portraying a swordsman, created at Ephesus about 100 BCE, and signed on the pedestal by Agasias, son of Dositheus, who is otherwise unknown.
