Happy Birthday to Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665), the leading painter of the classical French Baroque style. Here is an image of a semi-postal (charity) stamp designed and engraved by Pierre Gandon after a detail from Poussin's Self-portrait (1650), and issued by France on February 20, 1965, Scott No. B388, Y&T No. 1443, plus an image of the original painting. - nethryk   |

Bernardo Loureiro Marques (1898-1962) was a Portuguese painter, illustrator, graphic artist and caricaturist. Here is an image of a stamp depicting a fashionably attired woman with a parasol, designed by Victor Santos after an untitled gouache (1922) by Marques, printed by lithography, and issued by Portugal on June 10, 1998 to commemorate the artist's birth centenary, Scott No. 2247, plus an image of Bernardo Marques's original work of art. - nethryk   |

Here are images of the se-tenant strip of three engraved stamps in a set honoring Italian painter Tiziano Vecellio (c. 1488-1576), known in English as Titian, and issued by Spain on March 28, 1978, Scott Nos. 2095a, and 2093-95. Mea culpa: Correction to my post of June 26 above about the 1978 Spain Titian stamps: The painting details illustrated on these stamps are from Titian's "Bacchanal of the Andrians" (1523-24) not "Judgment of Paris," as stated in Scott, and as I was just too darn lazy to verify independently before posting. Here is an image of the entire original oil on canvas masterpiece. Note: A special thank you to my erudite philatelic friend Eli for pointing out this error to me!  - nethryk  |
