Here is an image of a stamp designed after a bronze sculpture entitled Monde ("World," 1947) by Russian-born French sculptor Antoine Pevsner (born Natan Borisovich Pevzner, 1886-1962), engraved by Claude Durrens (1921-2003), and issued by France on November 14, 1987, Scott No. 2041, Y&T No. 2494, plus a photo of Monde.

Eduardo Sívori (1847-1918) was an Argentine artist widely regarded as his country's first realist painter. Here is an image of a stamp depicting a painting by Eduardo Sívori of his wife, printed by photogravure, and issued by Argentina on January 27, 1968, Scott No. 850, plus an image of the original work of art.

Here is an image of a stamp depicting a painting entitled Rafu-zu ("Nude," 1920) by Japanese painter and illustrator Kagaku Murakami (1888-1939), combined engraved and photogravure, and issued by Japan on November 22, 1979, Scott No. 1365, plus an image of the original work of art.

Pierre Paul Puget (1620-1694) was a French painter, sculptor, architect and engineer. Here is an image of a semi-postal (charity) stamp honoring Pierre Puget, designed and engraved by Charles Mazelin (1882-1964), and issued by France on May 20, 1961, Scott No. B351, Y&T No. 1296, plus images of a self-portrait by Pierre Puget, and a photograph of one of his marble sculptures, "Perseus and Andromeda" (1684).

Happy Birthday to German painter, sculptor, graphic artist, and poet Max Ernst (1891-1976). Here is an image of a stamp reproducing Ernst's painting entitled Aprčs nous la maternité ("After Us, Motherhood," 1927), printed by photogravure, and issued by France on October 10, 1991 as a joint issue with Germany commemorating Max Ernst's birth centenary, Scott No. 2245, Y&T No. 2727.

The Fontana Maggiore is a monumental medieval fountain located between the cathedral and the Palazzo dei Priori in the city of Perugia in Italy. It was made between 1277 and 1278 by sculptors Nicola Pisano and Giovanni Pisano. On the twenty-five sides of the basin are sculptures representing prophets and saints, the labors of the months, the signs of the zodiac, scenes from Genesis, and events from Roman history. Here are images of the two stamps in a set designed after sculptures on the fountain (a sower, and a harvester tying a sheaf), printed by photogravure, and issued by Italy on March 21, 1963 to publicize the FAO's "Freedom from Hunger" Campaign, Scott Nos. 871 & 872, plus a photo of the Fontana Maggiore.

Bram (Abraham Gerardus) van Velde (1895-1981) was a Dutch painter known for an intensely colored and geometric semi-representational painting style related to Tachisme and Lyrical Abstraction. Here is an image of a stamp designed by Jean-Paul Véret-Lemarinier after a lithography by Bram van Velde entitled Embrasement (Rivičre 389) ("Ignite," 1980), printed by photogravure, and issued by France on April 25, 1987, Scott No. 2038, Y&T No. 2473.

Today is World Art Day!

Here are images of the two stamps in a set depicting 18th century Swedish works of art, designed by Bertil Kumlien (1919-2012), engraved by Arne Wallhorn, and issued by Sweden on August 28, 1985 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Scott Nos. 1551 & 1552, Facit Nos. 1364 & 1365, plus images of the original artworks.

Koloman Sokol (1902-2003) was a Slovak painter, graphic artist and illustrator who is considered a founder of modern Slovak graphic art. Here is an image of a stamp designed after a work by Sokol depicting a working man and woman, entitled "At the Edge of Town" (1931), engraved by Ladislav Jirka (1914-1986), and issued by Czechoslovakia on January 28, 1971, Scott No. 1730, plus an image of a photograph of Kolomon Sokol, whose face was a work of art in itself!

Here is an image of a stamp depciting a wood carving entitled Fingerkrok ("Fingerhook," 1910) by Swedish master wood carver Axel Petersson "Döderhultarn" (1868-1925), engraved by Arne Wallhorn (1921-1994), and issued by Sweden on October 28, 1968 as one of a set of three similar stamps commemorating Axel Petersson's birth centenary, Scott No. 798, Facit No. 641.

Here is an image of a stamp designed and engraved by French artist Jacques Combet (1920-1993) after a self-portrait by Jónsson, and issued by Iceland on September 18, 1975, Scott No. 484, Facit No. 545, plus an image of a photograph of Einar Jónsson at work in his art studio in Rome in 1902.
