Bygones. Here is an image of a semi-postal stamp depicting a detail from a painting which I think turned out rather better. "The Love Letter," after a painting (c. 1811) by Spanish Romantic painter Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828), designed and engraved by Claude Durrens, and issued by France on March 7, 1981, Scott No. B538, Y&T No. 2124, plus a photo of the original painting.

Here is an image of a stamp depicting La Méditerranée (The Mediterranean), after a 1901 sculpture (original in limestone; cast in bronze c. 1951-53), by French Catalan sculptor and painter Aristide Joseph-Bonaventure Maillol, better known as Aristides Maillol (1861-1944), designed and engraved by Albert Decaris, and issued by France on February 18, 1961 to commemorate Malliol's birth centenary, Scott No. 984, Y&T No. 1281, plus a photo of the sculpture from the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

FRANCOIS ROUAN - "Volta Faccia"

Georgia O'Keeffe was born in Wisconsin in 1887. Her mother moved to Charlottesville in 1909 and rented the house here. Beginning in 1912, O'Keeffe intermittently lived with her mother and sisters. She took a summer drawing class taught by Alon Bement at the University of Virginia. O'Keeffe taught art classes at the university each summer between 1913 and 1916.





I think I figured out tonight why I am dibbling with these stamps.
Looking, sorting and scanning these stamps is bringing back memories of my past, my life. I stop and smell the roses. Like this set of stamps. Once I worked on a six month contract in Charlottesville, Va. Had a small apartment on 12 1/2 Street right of the UVA campus down the street where Georgia O'Keeffe lived way back when....

Good memories...

Here is an image of a semi-postal stamp designed after "Kosovo Maiden" a painting (1919) by Serbian Realist artist Uroš Predic (1857-1953), engraved and printed by American Bank Note Company, and issued by the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (Yugoslavia) on January 30, 1921 as one of a set of three stamps benefiting the Disabled Soldiers' Fund, Scott No. B13, SG No. 178, plus an image of Predic's painting.

Here is an image of a stamp depicting Les mariés de la Tour Eiffel, an oil painting (1919) by one of the greatest European modernists, Russian-French artist Marc Chagall (1887-1985), designed and engraved by Pierre Gandon, and issued by France on November 9, 1963, Scott No. 1076, Y&T No. 1398, plus a photo of the original masterpiece.
