At last! I think I have identified a retouched variety in an early decimal issue. I often find the illustrations in ACSC are not very helpful, but perhaps the issue is not having a similar stamp for comparison. In this case, the stamp is as shown below.

The retouch is below the golfer's armpit as follows:

The shading in the area of the suspected retouch looks very different from another area of shading, i.e. more straightish areas of colour rather than a random marbling effect.

Is this a correct interpretation?

Sorry, Peter. I should have said retouch. Will edit out the error.

There will be a few cylinder varieties with the 1974 non-Olympic sports stamps, some unlisted, the one you have is definitely a retouch and it looks very much like the example shown in the 2002 edition of the ACSC (last edition published).

It is catalogued as 670i (Type II).

I must have been having a senior moment and, of course, it should have been "cricket". Mind you, that bat would be useful to golfers in Canada to dig a ball out of our deep snow!

Thanks, Rob, for the ID.

Frank.

I was surprised when I found I didn't have another stamp to compare this to. Well, today I found them hidden in a stock book - 3 complete sets of the non-Olympic sports, abd lo and behold, it looks like I have another copy of this variety. Pictures follow:

For comparison, here is the detail image from previously.

It is rather odd that these do not look like the same retouch. Is there any possibility that this comes from a different position on the sheet? There do seem to be significant differences in the black line that separates the retouched grey area from the yellow area above it. Alternatively, there could have been intermediate stages of this variety.

Frank.

Mmmm! I think I'll just go back to the stamp room and look over my non-Olympic sports stamps.
