Here's another one picked up at the same auction. If anyone can read lower case Russian and tell me the destination, I'd be grateful.

It's a registered philatelic cover from Odessa, Ukraine, posted 11.10.1918 addressed to somewhere I can't read. Stamps on cover are Russia currency stamps SG174, 175 and 176 (1, 2 and 3k) and Ukraine stamps SG9 (40k), L127 (3k imperf), L168 (3k perf.), and L187 (10k on 7k).

I've also included a detail of the front of the registration label for those who like that sort of thing.

My Russian is horrible and my Ukranian is even worse (they are similar but different languages), but my first thought is it could be Zagreb. If anyone knows for sure I would look forward to being corrected.

Tim,

your letter was addressed locally in Odessa. The underlined word in the address is "zdes" = "here", "at this point". It is probably self-addressed to the sender.

As you mentioned, it is philatelic in origin - the unoverprinted "money stamps" were probably used as decorative labels. The rest of the franking comes to 50k - the 40 shahiv Ukrainian stamp counting as 20k. The registered intercity rate was in fact 50k, although the local registered letter rate should have been 45k.

Vasia, thank you so much! Of course, as soon as you mention it I can see zdes' now and it puts the whole cover into proper context. I was never very good at reading cursive Cyrillic script...
