I think I'll consult before I buy. That might be the safer route.

I was present at the auction for the 40 penny blacks. I put my hand up until it reached 1000. My budget didn't really want me to buy it anyway. It sold for £1200. I checked the backs of all the stamps in a viewing most were sound. I didn't look *too* closely though. That auction was quite competitive.

ardley - interesting! Do you usually attend? It's fiddly for me to get there - I'd have a train ride and overnight stay, so I'd have to combine it with a day or two in Warwickshire. I think I've got ine lot (not GB) from this auction.

Takes me a couple of hours to drive. This is the first time I went to this auction. Lot's of very high quality collections and boxes. I mainly deal in GB (since I am only 28 and only been collecting for a few years) and I had my eye on many lots especially the High value mint QV! If you want high quality collections at OK prices W&W are the best I've found so far. I Recommend a full day of viewing since they have a lot of material - I spent about 6 hours viewing 20-30 lots, mostly skimming. they accept phone bids, and prebids and online bids, but I like being there in person. I would say lots go for a little higher than other auctions I go to, since there are quite a few dealers competing. Other auctions I go to are Essex Stamp Auctions (again a lot of quality stuff, just not so many collections, mainly singles) and T&T (tunbridge wells), great for big random sorter boxes, and very cheap.

I mainly buy for investment and sell the remainders on ebay.

Sounds like fun - which is what I buy for. I've been buying from W&W for several years via their online bidding system, and had excellent service. Pay for lots by phone on the Friday, they're in London on Monday or Tuesday. You might try Somerset Stamp Auctions, who're a friendly business, and I'm sure it's a lovely area to spend a few hours in. The other place I regularly buy from is Tim Davidson, which is in Nottingham - but mainly for cigarette cards, as the stamps aren't usually of much interest. And a fairly scary buyer's premium!
