Hi my American friends...
I know a little about American stamps, but not as much as you guys..Maybe you can help me with a silly question about this cover below.

Sorry about quality..Scanner pooping out.

Robert

Here is the back of the cover..A standard Scott 632 on cover with an "Aug, 10th, 1934" cancel.

BUT..When I turned it over, I noticed in the bottom right hand corner was a copy right date of "1992"..Am I stupid or should this not be like that.

The number might not represent a date.

Or the second 9 should be a 3.

I believe that 1992 is a 'series' number from this set by the publisher of this card?

The number is a series number. Most post cards had these. It wasn't until the late 1950's and more recently that these numbers started to disappear.

Here are a couple of examples with the series numbers.

This does not mean that all postcards have a series number; many don't. Here's an example, shown front and back, as sometimes the series numbers are on the reverse side of the postcard.

Series numbers on postcards were just a simple way of identification for production and inventory control by the manufacturers and the retailers. Some companies used them and some did not.

The postmark on your postcard is from the small town of Rainbow Lake, New York and on the front of the postcard the picture shows the lake that gave this town its name. It is in the northern part of the state and has a population of about 1,400 people. The post office there started in 1884. The name of this town is not unique - in the US there are 10 other towns in different states around the country with the same name - Rainbow Lake.

Kimo, I believe that's Lake Placid seen from Whiteface Mountain. Was it called Rainbow Lake at one time?

Thanks for the clarification, from the angles in these photos the two lakes do look quite different.
