The Sydney Mail and New South Wales Advertiser had a title/nameplate/masthead that matches Rod222's piece from 18/12/1886 until 25/6/1887:

Another Tatts piece with halfpenny stamps - this time from Greta, 53 km WNW of Newcastle.

This one is interesting - the closest I can find after a quick look at Freeman's 'The Numeral Cancellations of New South Wales' is 391(1) Kembla, rated RRRR.

I also see the possibility of the last digit being '0'.

I would support 391
Would that be a steel / brass hammer?
What would the marginal marking read FDS?

Kembla closed in 1866, so it's definitely not a 391.

I'm far from convinced that it's a NSW numeral in the first place.

It looks more like a Queensland railway cancel to me.

Rod222, the marginal inscription is part of 'DIAMOND JUBILEE POSTAGE STAMPS - PRICE: 2d. per label 1s. per row of six etc.

The date of closure of Kembla certainly doesn't match the stamp issue date but the numeral itself appears to be a good match for the Kembla example shown by Hugh Freeman:

The Star v Barred format raises questions
and the state of the impression would tend it toward a rubber railway device?

I find it hard to imagine a steel or brass postal hammer degrading to that extent.

What numbers did NSW numerals reach please?

Rod222, Hugh Freeman lists New South Wales numerals up to 2100, although the highest seen is 2099.

He speculates that Victoria 'copied the logic of finishing the series at 2100' from New South Wales.

I have 60 Diamond Jubilee stamps, and perhaps 4-5 have readable Pmks
The general impressions are of worn and smudgy duplexes, or barred killers.

I had another look at this on my phone while I was in town, which gave me a different perspective.

My initial thought (Qld Railway Cancel) was based on what look like parallel horizontal lines under the numeral (see the second image).

The imperf diadem stamp in Hugh's book couldn't have been used at Kembla, and it's not a 391. It's a poorly inked 68 or 88.

I'm pretty sure the cancellation is a well worn 168 of Bodalla.

Rod, the devices were made of soft metal and wore easily.

Victoria went to number 2100 to trump NSW, not to equal them, intercolonial rivalries being what they were, and still are to an extent. They issued numerals to 1906, two years after NSW ceased.
