The trimmed (previously perforated) Five Pence diadem stamp has a couple of strikes of the Sydney 20 circular datestamp (i.e. not a 'numeral cancellation') and it appears someone may have tried to pass it off as the far more expensive imperforate 5d by trying to match it to a circle on the 'piece'.
Why would someone do that before posting and getting a postmark???
The perforated stamp has been attached to an envelope and postmarked with a couple of strikes of the Sydney 20 canceller. It was later soaked off by a collector. Some time later, someone trimmed the perforations from the stamp and stuck it onto the current piece.

The ink that makes the apparent italic '4' is part of the secondary ink impression of that inner part of the four-ring cancel. The secondary ink impressions are more pronounced on the larger outer rings to the right on your image.
The secondary impression might be due to a little 'chatter' or slip as the stamp was cancelled or even an under-inked initial strike that was subsequently re-done.

The 1d Laureate is cancelled by a Sydney dumb obiterator.
The '47' is one half of a Sydney duplex, with NSW in the centre of four concentric ovals. There's some obvious chatter in the postmark visible at the top right of the image. Any semblance of a numeral is pure coincidence.
I know this is not a numeral cancel (nothing of this type shown in Freeman). Can anyone point me to how this cancel would be utilised in postage due usage?
