Why Have Designs Gone Abstract

I am an artist (oil Painting mostly) but I have a keen eye for what looks good and what does not. I am a professional so please hear me out.. I ask how and why have the designs of stamps gone from so detailed and so intricate; to just plain ugly and simple? Stamps dating back (I'd like to say before the 1960's), are most intriguing because of everything the designs entail.. However, now a days, it is far too simple, too abstract, that I may find myself less attracted to it.. please anyone, I would appreciate some more opinions on where this form of art is headed and how may I impact it for the better?

I believe an artist cannot be recognized for doing something that looks realistic. They have to do something different to stand out and get recognized for it.

I inherited a massive amount of stamps and I need to understand how to categorize, manage and interpret everything.. A broader, general understanding of the systems involved with philately..
I don't understand the albums they create for us to follow; all across the board.. The structure of the system to follow.. I am already aware of the Scott's Catalogue..
Do you have a PDF link to share? Do you know a book I can buy? A system I can use? Someone in Ottawa I can meet with?
Please help me make sense of the quantity I have. Some Canadian stamps date back to 1860 and I have an album from all over the world that was issued 1930 (Paragon Stamp Album). I also have more Canadian stamps that are in original packaging from Canada Post (with receipts) most date from 1960-1990.
I think I will keep this collection until I learn more about it, strictly because of its size..
What is the established protocol I should follow?
