Thank you all for your valuable comments on my question. In fact, from Renden comments, after my eyes accomodate, I can see the top part of a C and a W below the date, which would indicate C. (anada) W.(est), which was typical on some cancellations prior to confederation (1867). As for Archeg comments (I am told there exists a complete plating for #19, duplicated in all three perforations, still intact) I would be interested to know where to go seek for those 3 copies, as I have been working on the 4th, for over 10 yrs+....Just hope I can live long enough to complete my plating. |

Now, archerg......I am not a techie.....you would be surprised... I have worked medicine for 40 years with objective findings (except psychiatry) and this software (Retroveal) was introduced to me in my thread on a wanted New Brunswick # 1 with a faint "28" numeral cancel.....the "techies" helped me solve my dilemma and am grateful to them and I bought the stamp (RF 8) from Deveney's in B.C. (Canada).
The only commentary I was exchanging with Don (Studebaker) was the fact that I was very close to your findings but would have appreciated an Image to objectivate your opinion. No harm done as you do not have it. Objective findings are very important in this "sport". If they exist.....they exist. If not and you say they exist, prove it. 99% is close to 100 %. Please keep talking about your findings that make your impression.....99% and Thanks ! This is a friendly Forum !! We do not confront.....we work together for the "sport" -

There are also the following:
The Stamp Specialist Red Book by H.L. Lindquist, New York, 1942 with an article on Canada 17c 1859, a study of its plate positions, by J. A. Calder.
The Stamp Specialist Brown Book by H.L. Lindquist, New York, 1943 with an article on Canada 17c 1859, the identification of its printings through color charts by J.A. Calder.

Nice one Wert. Looks like it may be position 65 due to the short transfer in Upper right, position dot on cheek, and weak transfer in lower left corner. I would need a close up of the small left oval as well as of the cheek area to confirm this. Nice sharp colors example. |

Anyone interested to see more images of the various positions of this great Canadian stamp can have a look on my plating project at the stampsmarter philatelic learning project site. Not complete but my plan is to complete a full sheet by 2020. (or earlier if I can find an affordable copy of the Burr on te shoulder (Pos. 7) |

It is interesting to note 8 d. (pence) on the upper left and right corners. Was that the equivalent of 17 cents at the time? Were any issued with straight edges since it was fully perforated in sheets of 100 (10 x 10)? |

I think there may be some with straight edge, as demonstrated by this pos. 100, but it is not conclusive as this may very well be the result of clipped perf on the right side... |
