Here is one of my First Flight Covers from 1919.
This is C1i stamp (NNSC and AAMC lists this as FF2) from St Johns April 19, 1919. To London.
I have two certs for it. Its unusual also because the individual who sent it to his wife was named "Martinsyde"....the maker of the plane

Here is the second cover for comparison...

This is stamp C2 on a first flight Jun 13, 1919 from St Johns to London. NSSC has this as FF3. AAMC (old and dated) has it as FF3a

I have a note inside and a cert from VGG

A third cover for comparative study. almost 100 years old!

C2 stamp from Harbour Grace June 14, 1919 to Ireland, reidirected. the Handley Page flight. I also have a cert and a cool note about two business guys talking about things including the IRA !

the stamp was torn off and re-attached but all legit (a lesson to not remove stamps!)

Hey Trodent,

I'd be happy to explain that but how about you scan your cover that started this thread?

There is a long story and a certificate to back it up, and the mystery is tied to the letter that was inside the cover--and note the return backstamp.

But again -- could you please share your image?

Thanks

Sorry for delayed response; traveling.
Sorry for confusing Trodent with original poster. Is it just me that wants to see that cover !?

Anyways, Trodent : There is a rather long story about the cover that I posted which you asked about. The short version is that it was not back stamped in London, but evidence supports that it flew on this first flight as one of 63 complimentary covers conveyed by Captain Mason. Note the correct stamp and proper cancel date etc in St Johns (it probably returned via ship). And the back cancel is July 1 but back in St Johns. The missing piece that convinced VGG to certify it was the personal note inside from this guy Carter to his daughter at this estate Hawthorndell, and his reference to his pal Captain Mason. In short--this rich guy mailed the letter to his daughter at his home and Captain Mason carried it (along with other covers). Historical reserach proved that Captain Mason was part of the exhibition/effort of this flight. Not strictly a one way postal cover, since it lacks the London backstamp. But I like it because it round-tripped.

Thanks Tommy, I guess you cant judge a Cover by what on the inside. Interesting story though. Thanks for taking the time to "enlighten" the stamp collectors forum with this awesome piece of philatelic history.
