Nothing mentioned in Scott's Classic catalogue on this issue having a bisect, but I was able to find a few on ebay.

Any information anyone has on these, or if you can point me to an online reference, I'd appreciate.

Found these in a small Macau box lot, trying to fill some spaces in my Big Blue-- they look legit, but also look like they absolutely could have been manufactured by a collector? Sure wish I had the original covers!

Any thoughts or info you can share, appreciated!

Thanks, Ray

There's a passing reference to the existence of the bisect on the Sandafayre site:

Growing political and social unrest returned during the first part of the 20th Century and chaos followed the assassination of King Carlos I and his heir, the Prince Royal Luis Felipe, in Lisbon on the 1st February 1908. The monarchy continued for a short time but eventually the young King Manuel II sought exile in England and a Republic was declared in early October 1910. The philatelic effect was perhaps as might be expected. The new government was overwhelmed by events. Remaining stocks of King Carlos I stamps were used overprinted with the word "República" and sent to Macau. There were significant shortages and local postal administrators used their innovative skills to satisfy demand. This included overprinting new values and bisecting stamps.

Your stamp is listed in the Mundifil Catalog; 7th edition from 2015 for former Portuguese colonies (which is the current catalog). The 3 avo, the bisect, is #130a, with a catalog value of 80 Euros used. I have two of them in my Macau collection; on piece like yours; with Macau circular date cancels from 1910.

perf12: if I was to make a guess, I would consider the eBay-UK cover you posted as being legitimate. It does have a Hong Kong receiving backstamp. If I lived in the UK, I would buy it, but also get a certificate of authenticity.

The catalog is the former Afinsa catalog with the old Afinsa numbers. It is now edited by renowned Portuguese stamp expert Sr. J. Miranda da Mota. I bought a copy in September, when I was in Lisbon, from Sr. Joaquim Macas. The catalog also may be available from D & P Stamps in Chula Vista, CA.

NOTE: I clicked on the links to make sure they work. The one for Macas does not, which is strange as I have it bookmarked and visited the site earlier this AM. Try entering it separately into your browser, with www instead of http://. For unknown reason, the SCF system changed my www to the http:// for each site.

Thanks much, Steve--
I'm not a climber, but have every "must read" book available from the great Himalaya climbs....1938, 1939, 1953 on K2, Annapurna! and so many Everest books....so I'm kind of an "Armchair" climber!

Would love to hear about any of your climbs sometime--
Thanks again, Ray

Very interesting thread that CoPilot just pointed me to when discovered a bisected 3a Macao 1903 King Carlos that I picked up in a recent auction lot myself and I was wondering about as there is no reference to it in Scotts

Very interested to know if anyone else has anything else to contribute on these interesting issues. I understand that there were several different diagonal bisects that were used in the early 1910s.

Yes, Afinsa lists both the 3 and 6 in bisects.
