Thanks Stampman2002 - this is good to know.

I'm a go to person where I live and have seen just 2 collections in the last 5 years - I wonder how many collections get thrown away without a second thought. A tragedy I try not to think about too much.

I can't honestly remember the last time I saw an old Scott International or such like on ebay/delcampe etc. that hadn't been picked over. Not that I look very much these days.......

Mike, a very nice and surprising acquisition. I am always worried about being underwhelmed when the asking price is low and the pictures are few, but this gives me inspiration to be a little more bold!

Some takeaway lessons to learn from this excellent thread. Whether one has direct heirs; or like me, no direct heirs; we owe it to ourselves and to our hobby to make arrangements for disposal of our collections after we're gone. The APS (American Philatelic Society, for Bobby DLR) has an estate advisory service. I'm in the midst of re-doing my estate plan and my philatelic properties will receive prominence.
