On an interesting note catapult mail was temporarily suspended in 1935 due to a ship overhaul and the Graf Zeppelin made several crossings between Brazil and Bathurst, Gambia to keep the mail flowing.

PostmasterGS,

Is there any aspect of German philately for which you don't have an awesome thread? Fascinating stuff--all of them.

Thanks for sharing.

Robert

Robert,

When you really start specializing in a area, you'd be amazed how many sub-areas there are. I still have quite a few areas that are grayed out in the menus on my website, meaning I haven't even started on them yet. Kinda depressing to look at. If I could just win the lottery and retire...

Bklynjava,

Looking good. That last one isn't a catapult cover, though. It's from a Do-X mail flight.

Lovely stuff, and thanks for sharing such excellent scans. I collect Bremen covers as a sideline, but specifically NON-catapult examples.

Bremen - Bremen (1 August 1929)

On 1 August 1929, the Bremen was on the return leg of its first catapult flight trip across the North Atlantic. On that date, it launched its catapult flight to its home port of Bremen, Germany.

Mail carried on the flight was stamped with a serial number, with a total of 19,003 pieces carried. These pieces originated from four sources — inland U.S. sources, U.S. seapost, German seapost, and Canada.

Most mail carried on-board bears a red Bremen cachet.
