I came across this stamp today in another one of my Uncle's boxes, it was mixed in with stamps that had nothing to do with this one. I can't find this particular stamp. It is an Airmail stamp from Indonesia, 1948 or 1949, maybe #2770, but is that correct? Google has not helped me using these search terms, it brought up many other's similar to this, but not this 4 1/2 r issue.
Anyone? What is the correct # for this stamp and approximate value, thanks!

Hi nigelc,
I tried using that Scott # and it brought up the US stamp. Any other thoughts? Thanks!

There is an Indonesia C27 airmail for sale on ebay right now that looks exactly like your stamp, 1949.

I would echo that.
All stamps from that set have no value assessed by Scott as "used"

$3.50 in 2009

The inscription on the bottom translates to State Printer Vienna.

I couldn't find any airmail stamps for Indonesia in my 2007 Scott

I have a 1958 Gibbons that says that stamps like this were produced circa 1948 in Vienna by private parties at a time when the Republic of Indonesia was under blockade. They were later put on sale in very small quantities for collectors. Gibbons goes on to say they "never saw proper postal service".

Interesting, thank you so much! No wonder I cannot find it. I found one stamp site that had a photo of it, but said they had found no copies yet. I wonder how small the run was, and if no one can find them, why are they not in demand for a collector? Is Indonesia a Country that is not very exciting to stamp collector's?

Thank you so much for the translation too. So there would not be any canceled one's out there period it seems.

Should I save it? Put it up on ebay? Do people collect these? @Rod: You found a catalogue value from 2009? I cannot find anything like that anywhere. This stamp drove me nuts yesterday, every place I went to it said no one had one and there were no values suggested. I only started looking as I had it in a junk pile for Etsy crafters, I saw it, and pulled it out. My uncle had it mixed in with a bunch of stamps still on paper. Plus I found more coins from around 1900, and some weird stamp paraphernalia. He hid things everywhere, and always put his treasures in with garbage. They found 10's of thousands of dollars hidden in trash in his garage! I shudder at what was thrown out as so many people didn't know he hid, buried and stashed anything of value.

Thanks so much, if anyone knows more about this stamp, please add your knowledge, I love it and appreciate it so much!
Best,
Barbara

PS: He was an avid gardener, whoever bought his house probably has a stash of valuables hidden in that garden, the greenhouse, he even had 2 headstones in his backyard that he took back from the cemetery when they were going to change them! They ended up in my backyard for 15 years after his death, my husband dragged them back to our house! Bet he had a stash under those headstones, too late now :( BTW, how many of you had to live with 2 cemetery headstones in your yards? Thanks ex husband, we sure were talked about! by the neighbors who saw them, so embarrassing!

Don't you want to go over there and dig for treasure, get a metal detector, dang! If we knew then what we know now...... should have, could have, would have, that's what we always said in poker!

And here I am, with boxes and boxes of stamps, knowing that I really have to look at them all or take them to an auction house, he has things marked with 'special grills', certain types of cancels, all the things I never learned as a kid. How on Earth would they go through 100,000+ stamps, a lot of them loose but the bulk in excellent condition the way he stored them? It would take someone month's, I can't imagine an auction house would just throw batches together knowing there are valuable stamps mixed in with the common stuff.

I know he is laughing right now!

Something which is often overlooked: is it written as Republik or as Repoeblik on the stamp.

If you look on this site below, you will see that 2 different printing from Vienna were made, one showing Repoeblik and the other showing Republik:
