Tagging omitted = stamp is supposed to have tagging, but it does not (i.e., the tagging was omitted).

The tagging becomes omitted just like a color becomes omitted - by accident.

Peter and dkabq8's,
Thanks so much.
Gee so simply. I was putting way to much into the definitions I was reading.

There are stamps and stamped envelopes that were not tagged by design. We would call them untagged, no? And not use the term tagging omitted.

Probably obvious, but worth mentioning, IMNOHO.

Thomas, I have in my collection some stamps that are supposed to be tagged but are not. I call them "tagging omitted". I also have some that are untagged. There is a difference.

There are also a few stamps that were meant to be untagged but were tagged by mistake. The example that comes to mind is the 3-cent star coil of 2002. In this case the mistake was the use of prephosphored paper for many of the stamps. Both the untagged version and the tagged error are common.
