i have a question about grading. I never bought a stamp with damage and also never buy stamp like pence issue where we find many time damaged stamp.. thin.. tear etc...

in the unitrade we have VF fine and VG for the pricing.

i know a damaged is not VF or Fine but for a VG ? a VG stamp can be restored or damaged ? I talk about pence issue. Or when a pence stamp have damage they worth only a little fraction of the price of a VG stamp ?

thanks

Stamps with damage are generally not worth anything. There are of course exceptions, like when it is a very rare stamp.

OK, I see what you are doing. I do not see a whole lot of damage on either of those. Further, I am not familiar with the price of these stamps.

I know nothing about these stamps or the pricing of damaged and/or repaired stamps.

The 2018 Unitrade values 5b in Canadian dollars as follows"
Mint: VF $35,000.00 F $15,000.00 VG $7,500.00
Used: VF $ 1,600.00 F $ 800.00 VG $ 400.00

Does the Unitrade catalogue make specific mention of grading/pricing the pence issues of early Canada?

Audetnelson1:
Neither of those stamps would receive a graded certificate from The Philatelic Foundation (PF), Professional Stamp Experts (PSE) or Philatelic Stamp Authentication and Grading (PSAG). The PF will not grade a stamp with a fault, PSE will not give a grade less than 50 and I believe that PSAG has the same policy.

I don't think that the OP ment "grading" in the sense of PSE-type marks out of a hundred, but pricing on a scale that runs out at a certain level in catalogues. Auctions show that there's a decent market for scarcer stamps with imperfections that most of us could never afford were they in excellent condition. If you're interested, there's probably no substitute for carefully tracking how stamps of this kind fare in auctions over a period, and then deciding whether you want to spend the money required to get them.

I'm not sure there's a definitive answer the the question audetnelson1.

At the upper price ranges it'll depend on the severity or lack thereof of the fault. The prices will fluctuate wildly I'd imagine.

Bobby De La Rue - No, the Unitrade catalogue does not make specific mention of grading/pricing the pence issues of early Canada.
