I have a mint SG38a Queen Victoria Three Pies Gwalior stamp with an inverted overprint. The SG catalogue value is £2,250. To get a certificate of authentication will cost around £50.00.
I'm not planning on selling at this stage, but if I did would a certificate help in selling a stamp?
Thank you

Naturally. Many of us would expect a certificate to be provided at the time of sale for an item of this catalog value. Absent one, it is legitimate to ask why so? Did the stamp receive a prior unsatisfactory opinion that was tossed?

Thank you! I shall ask RPS to do one - well hopefully it's genuine, I think it is!

Well I have today got my stamp and certificate back from RPS Ltd.

Interesting that they have said that it is a genuine stamp but 'variety inverted - unusual - is a forged overprint.'

The question is now, does that make it worthless or more valuable?

It has some (small) value to someone with a forgery reference collection. But thank you for reporting the results back.

Don is correct ,it has a value to me and would purchase it for a few dollars .

How is the price determined ,it is determined by the forgeries that are up in public stamp auctions ,I can usually buy them at a price between $2.00 and $4.00 a piece and get them by the hundreds ,there are two lots right now up for auction and the price is estimated in the stated price range .

But back to your stamp .......first thing always is to buy a few yes a few of the regular stamp and compare them to what you got inverted ,it saves a lot of money and if need be come on this chat room and have someone like me or many others to put up a regular stamp and wait for the comments .

Here is a real stamp and maybe one of the regulars here can capture both your and mine and put them side by side for a real look at what the experts in Britain were looking at .

Sorry for the delay, I am not getting messages. Bad luck on the cert and the high cost. At least you, and everbody else, now know what the forgery looks like. Just a pity it cost fifty quid to find out.
