Hi all, This stamp was in a lot of Japan stamps I bought but I can't find it anywhere. The letters are also look a bit different to wnat I'm seeing on the other Japan stamps. Any help or pointers would be appreciated. Ideally, I would love to know what it says! :)

Hi, This is a postal seal from Japan, used for sealing the envelope for value declared mail for sending cash. This particular seal was issued in 1910. The earlier issue (1901) has perfins running horizontally, as opposed to this vertical version. The retail value was 1 Sen (= 1/100 yen) per 3 stamps. As this is not a postal stamp, there's no wonder you couldn't find it anywhere... there's very limited information on the Web and you need to look into specialized revenue catalogues and cinderella stamp catalogues. The inscription says (the horizontal writing in these days were from RIGHT to LEFT, as opposed to today's fashion) 1st line : "Ka-Kaku-Hyou-Ki" = value declared 2nd line : "Yu-Bin-Butsu-Fu-Kan-Shi" = Postal Item Seal Paper 3rd line : "Tei-Shin-Sho" = Ministry of Communications And this is a beautiful stamp; I love the sophisticated design and the purple color Hope this helps. - Hironobu |

FYI, this is the image of the same stamp from my collection; the perfins running vertically are Japanese postal marking, rotated 90 degrees and interconnected. - Hironobu |

Thank you, Hironobu, for the very informative reply!
Yes, it is indeed very beautiful (I don't know why my phone messed with the colour like that) and I really hated to stick it at the back of the album with the rest of the unwanted stuff just because I didn't know what it was.
Yours is used as far as I see. Wasn't the purpose of the perforation to tear the seal when opening the envelope...? |

Quote: Yours is used as far as I see. Wasn't the purpose of the perforation to tear the seal when opening the envelope...? I imagined the purpose of the perfins was of security reason to prevent fraudulent imitation, but your observation as to ease the seal to break up upon any malicious action to open the envelope (and steal the money and then reseal) also does make sense . Thanks for the nice observation ! As these stamps were used to seal the flap of the envelope, I reckon that the used ones without any damage are coming from envelopes that have been cut opened at the top (and thus the flap remaining unopened)... - Hironobu |

Narumi (2016) shows that stamp with a two-character overprint.
Under: Registration Tax, First Issue. 1888 - 1896.
That stamp (with OP) is listed as Catalogue 178. 1896.
Will check a few other resources.

At the risk of info overload, Barefoot (2006) lists four stamps in the "series":
12. Ten yen orange-red.
12a. Mihon,
13. 50 yen green.
13a. Mihon.
50 yen issue is Takenouchi no Sukune.
Interestingly the mihon version of 12 is priced at 25 percent. Which the mihon version of 13 is priced at one-seventh.
Hope this helps solve the mystery.
