Soviet Union militaristic cover: I find this cover interesting because of the number and types of weapons depicted on the stamp. Does any one know what the numbers in the boxes refer to? Thanks Robert
I agree with Rod: They're showing how to write the numerals in the postcode boxes, so that they can be read more easily by postal employees, or maybe even by a machine. Perf12's example only has the boxes for the postcode, not the models for the numbers (though the illustration does show how to use the boxes in this particular example). I'm assuming that the boxes were only used for domestic postcodes, which is why they were left blank on Robert's envelope that was mailed to East Germany.
I remember when the USPS philatelic catalog used to have instructions on how to write numbers on the order form so that the orders could be processed more efficiently.
