Are stamps cancelled with the first day postmark worth any more than the same stamp in used condition. I have several hundred of these but they are on regular envelopes not commemorative ones. Some have interesting first day stamps on the envelope like the one I have uploaded.

First Day Covers of common stamps can be worth more than the stamp on its own. Depending on the country, there are some FDC creators that are more rare than others.

I had a similar question, while not exactly the same as yours:

maybe it's interesting though for you.

In general, I would say yes. But many factors come into play, like condition and overall collector interest in the time frame.

Your example is not a first day. The first day for that stamp was May 29, 1953. Your cover was made for the event the cachet describes. Unfortunately, the postmark strike isn't very good and the envelope looks creased.

Yes, this is rare. I've collected cancels on 19th century stamps for so long that I eventually started doing the same on 20th century issues.

Circular date cancels primarily, and the earlier the date and cleaner the strike the better.

Occasionally I'd find show cancels, and those are fare game as well.

Actual first day of use, socked on the nose dated cancels are, needless to say, a scarcity. Most collector of covers, like the one pictured above, desire a 'philatelic cancel that does't deface the stamp.

It's fun to open an old Scott album and see dated cancellations on virtually every page. Not too expensive either, just time consuming.
